BACKGROUND
When WO=MEN was founded in 2006, there was virtually no room for gender in the budget for development cooperation. Among the organisations that were concerned with gender there was no sharing of knowledge. Moreover, there was no monitoring of the implementation of international goals agreed at the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995.
Therefore, Oxfam Novib, HIVOS, Cordaid and ICCO took the initiative to form a coalition that prioritised the empowerment of women and girls & gender equality. WO=MEN was created out of this coalition. We have subsequently grown to become a platform of around 50 organisations and 125 individual members. Together with our members, we work towards a just world in which gender equality and the rights of women and girls and gender non-conforming persons are respected in the Netherlands and beyond.
