Why insecurity on the streets is not a women's problem

"Will you message me when you get home?" It is a question that will sound familiar to many women in particular. Thinking about your safety when walking down the street at night is something girls are taught from an early age. That should not be necessary, say women's rights organizations.
It is nothing new for Laila Ait Baali, director of the Dutch foundation Women equals Men. "I'm shocked when I hear from young girls that they map out their bike routes home in the evening according to the time. They let each other know when they leave the door, share their live location."
Not that Ait Baali doesn't do it himself, on the contrary. "I also sometimes pretend I'm on the phone when I walk home."
