In the lead up to International Women’s Day, the Shelter City Programme and WO=MEN would like to shine the light on one of the brave women human rights defenders from the MENA region: Sara.
Sara (not her real name) is a women human rights defender focusing on women’s rights, education, freedom of speech and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence. She is one of the founders and leaders of a campaign which for 20 years promote women's rights to equal access to sports and active participation in public affairs in her home country.
Since 2005, Sara has been actively working on a wide range of topics concerning women, from education to legal issues in marriage and citizenship rights. She is involved in digital activism, and the digital security that this requires to stay safe. During the round table Sara aims to raise awareness and discuss solutions for frontline women human rights defenders who face dual challenges: risking political persecution and violence while working secretly at home with minimal funding and support, or being forced into exile and struggle with migration laws and the inability to serve their communities directly.
