WO=MEN, in partnership with Justice &Peace Netherlands, warmly invites you to join us for a meeting with Miluska, an advocate for LGBTIQ+ and women's rights and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence. Miluska aims to use this meeting to expand her network, share her experiences working with the LGBTIQ+ community, and present the CeDoSTALC report on human rights violations, particularly those affecting the transgender community in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Same-sex sexual acts are legal in Peru and there are no legal barriers for self-organizing as LGBTIQ+ communities. However, it remains an unsafe and challenging environment for the LGBTIQ+ community. There are many barriers to same-sex marriage and adoption, legal recognition of gender identity and lack of guarantees for equal access to education, housing, health, and work. In addition, LGBTIQ+ people continue to experience violence, discrimination, and hatred as result of stereotypes, prejudice and stigma surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity.
Miluska defends the rights of trans people by offering them legal, economic, health and social protection. She is the executive director of TRANS Organización Feminista (TOF), the national coordinator of Red Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Personas Trans (RedLacTrans) and the founder of Peru's first shelter for trans people: Zuleymi Trans House.
In the Netherlands, she is currently hosted in The Hague by Justice & Peace Netherlands as part of the Shelter City initiative, a global movement of safe and inspiring spaces for human rights defenders at risk. Shelter City was founded in 2012 by Justice & Peace Netherlands as a concrete and accessible way to support the cause of human rights defenders at risk, with The Hague as the first Shelter City. It is a space for human rights defenders to re-energize, receive tailormade support, and engage with allies from all over the world.
