Laetitia van den Assum (London, Mexico City, Nairobi) at the WO=MEN office.
Because of this important year (Celebration Beijing + 25, Celebration
resolution 1325, Celebration 5 years SDGs) and in the run-up to the government
reporting on CEDAW this year, the creation of the CEDAW treaty in the late 70s,
the international context in which it came about and the years after. We also
discuss the current context in which gender equality and women's rights are
under pressure and we examine the extent to which parallels can be drawn
between then and now.
Laetitia van den Assum, former Ambassador, among others in London, Mexico City
and Nairobi, is invited. She started her diplomatic career in 1977, after which
she negotiated CEDAW on behalf of the Netherlands in the following years and
co-wrote the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations accepting
the treaty. She was present at the UN women's conferences in Copenhagen (1980)
and Nairobi (1985) and as an official delegation leader in Beijing in 1995.
This session takes place on Thursday, February 13th from 12:00-13:30 at the
