Reminder & invite WO=MEN’s open afternoon session
Women Human Right Defenders: Fighting the Closing Space!
Dear members and partners of WO=MEN,
You are all invited to our open afternoon session Women Human Right Defenders: Fighting the Closing Space! on Monday 11th from 13.30 – 16.30 pm at the Witte Vosch in Utrecht. This afternoon session is part of our general members’ meeting in which the WO=MEN network and partners have the opportunity to network, have in-depth discussions and jointly strategize.
The aim of our open afternoon session at the 11th – one day after the International Day for Human Rights – is to analyse the current challenges that Women Human Right Defenders (WHRDs) worldwide daily face. With all participants we aim to identify the preconditions WHRD’s need to continue their work. Additionally we’ll discuss the different strategies we should and can adapt as Dutch and international gender justice network to support these preconditions.
From a personal perspective Renate, LGBTI activist, program manager and community organizer for a community based organizations in Indonesia, will explain how she deals with the fundamental religious context LGBTI activists nowadays have to work in. Especially since the Indonesian government has identified the LGBTI community as a threat to national stability. Renate currently is a guest of Justice & Peace’s Shelter City Program.
Zohra Moosa, executive director of MamaCash, will give an overarching perspective on the different challenges WHRDs worldwide face. MamaCash with other members of the Count Me In! alliance has done extensive work on supporting WHRDs worldwide. Just recently their report Standing Firm was launched as a tool for women’s and trans led organizations to understand and better navigate the closing space.
You are very much welcome to join the session and to further spread the word! If you’d like to attend, please register asap. If you have any questions on this session, please contact Anne-Floor Dekker / 06 4777 4842.
